Padwa procession delights Girgaon

For many in Girgaum, the Maharashtrian New Year began on a note of surprise as ‘Lokmanya Tilak’ and ‘Veer Savarkar’ walked down the streets early morning, followed by a loyal band of followers. Yesterday, the first time in decades, Girgaum saw a procession on Gudhi Padwa. Even for a hardcore ‘Girgaumkar, the event was a new experience. A large number fo people participated in the yatra that began from the Phadke Ganesh Mandir, V P Road.
Hundreds of onlookers gathered at Girgaum Chowpatty
yesterday evening, not just to watch the sunset, but to witness a rocket flare spectacle they can only thank Captain Suresh Choudhary of the merchant navy for.On the other hand, Choudhary’s magnanimity was not so intentional.
He landed in jail on December 18 for carrying 12 rocket flares without proper documentation on the Rajdhani Express. Choudhary wanted to fire the flares to celebrate his son’s wedding, which is today. Luckily, he managed to get bail and the marriage is still on.
